In the International Nath Order, Initiation—known as Diksha in Sanskrit—is when a qualified Initiator transmits something of their own consciousness into the initiate’s spirit. That spiritual seed, if nurtured, may lead to attainment. Left untended, it remains dormant. The spark is a living link with Nath sages of the past, now offered by those who tend the flame.
The rite is given in person. Some portion of the Initiator’s awareness and Shakti is transmitted to the neophyte. The new Nath or Devi is generally given a cryptonym. The touch is fixed by sacred ash (vibhuti) on several parts of the body. Only a Nath or Devi holding a MAGIKOS Charter to Initiate may give this diksha. There is no imposed oath. Practice after the rite is what moves the work forward.
Shri Gurudev Mahendranath wrote in The Phantastikos that the initiator passes something of himself to the one initiated; that the line is old; and that once received, the Nath initiation is yours throughout life. No one can take it from you. You cannot renounce it. That is the INO initiation. It is not the sannyas diksha of the Adinath sadhu seat, which he would not give in the West.
