INO Glossary: Bhikkhu

A bhikkhu (male) or bhikkhuni (female) is a fully ordained Buddhist monastic. A bhikkhu lives by receiving donations of food and necessities from others. Many Buddhists believe that merit is gained by the offerings of sustenance to bhikkhus. In this way, a bhikkhu is supported by his lay community.
