INO Glossary: Devi

Definition and Significance
Devi is a Sanskrit term meaning the female aspect of divinity, closely related to the English word “Goddess.” In the International Nath Order, Devi is also used as a suffix added to the name or cryptonym given to an initiated female Nath, signifying her spiritual status.
The Divine Mother
Devi represents the Divine Mother, embodying strength and holding an equal role alongside the male aspect of divinity. She is energy, or Shakti, the vital force without which the male aspect—representing consciousness—is powerless. As a traditional saying states, “Shiva is shava (a corpse) without Shakti.”
