Japa is the repetition of a mantra. It may be spoken aloud, formed on the lips, or held in the mind. Counts are usually kept on a mala of 108 beads. The extra, often larger bead is the guru bead. It is not counted. It is not crossed. When it is reached, the mala is turned and the count runs back the other way.
Within the International Nath Order japa is part of daily sadhana, done at the zonule. The mantra is the formula. Japa is the work of repeating it. A Nath mala is often strung of rudraksha.
