Mantra

The Sanskrit word mantra refers to a sacred verbal formula or invocation which can be used to unveil or attain to mystic potentialities. The repetition of a mantra, known as japa is frequently done during puja using a mala to count the repetitions.

Common mantras:

  • Om Gam Ganapati Namah—a mantra of Ganesha
  • Om Namah Shivaya—a mantra of Shiva
  • Om Mani Padma Hum—a common Buddhist mantra meaning “May the jewel be in the lotus!”
