The Genesis of INO

Another interesting example from the ancient past of the INO. I offer two of the earliest examples of Shri Mahendranath’s work to form a new Order in the West. The first attempt was the idea of a broad minded, cooperative and harmonious Pagan International. Nice name and idea, really.
The second attempt was the idea of a Tantrik Order based on the teachings of the Uttara Kaula Sampradaya. The free love days of the Freak Scene were still in bloom and it was thought the Tantrik teachings might explode into a bright flame. There may have been some kind of explosion, but the understanding and secret rites are largely only practiced behind closed doors with little comment today.
Personal correspondence has suggested that information related to the formation of the International Nath Order should be looked at with some interest. I’ve posted the material related to Shri Mahendranath’s sympathy for “Hippy/Freak Scene” to give some indication as to what aspect of the public he was appealing to in the early days.
With the passage of time it became clearer that the higher aspects of Yoga and Tantra required serious application of time and practice. Of course, serious application is not always the first or last word in “fun,” as time and tedious effort is required. While Tantra teachings may remain as the quickest route to signs of success and progress, most cannot carve out the time required in a busy life. In many cases, the initial blast of excitement in embracing a new approach, or Way of Life dwindles over time and motivation becomes unclear to nil. I doubt any of these factoids are “News” in any way, but perhaps there are those with comments, ideas or potential solutions.
To quote Shri Mahendranath in 1989. “It is Attainment we want and not just a new whirl of activity.”
