The Indian sect known as Uttara Kaula may be translated as “Northern Family” or “Northern Clan.” The Kaulas were identified as Shaktas and associated with the Mother Goddess. Their mark was cosmic in-being, togetherness, and the equality of the sexes.
Shri Gurudev Mahendranath received this parampara from Shri Pagala Baba of Ranchi and, at Pagala Baba’s passing, became guru of the sect. He did not continue Uttara Kaula as a separate sadhu line in the West. He willed that its transmission, mantras, and lore be taken back into the greater Nath stream. That confluence is the International Nath Order, a householder path, not the old Indian sadhu seat. The word Kaula names the way of the clan. Uttara Kaula names this northern sect. They are not the same entry.
